THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BALINESE RELIGION
Part 1: from the prehistory until the arrival of the Javanese Hindus
A long time ago Bali was connected to Java (at the Westside). East of Bali was and is the very deep Lombok Strait dividing Bali from Lombok. Dr. Wallace pointed here his ‘Wallace-line’ . More about Dr. Wallace when we are on the road to Pejeng.
Prehistory
From 1500 b.C. Bali was in the Stone Age.
Utensils, weapons, sarcophagus. Megaliths etc. are found
Since 300 b.C. the Balinese used iron and bronze utensils.
We stop in the oldest capital Pejeng to see historical artefacts.
The religion in this period was directed to nature gods and ancestors.
The world was divided in good and bad, man and women, kaja and kelod. It was a agricultural society.
Pejeng
In the Pura Pusering Jagat we see interesting statues and buddhistic stupas. In the Pura Panatan Sasih we find a very special artifact: The Moon of Pejeng!
But there are more interesting places:
Gunung Kawi
The influence of Buddhism and Hinduism is slowly growing. Priests of both religions were sent to Bali and the Rajas accepted them in the courts. Because of their ‘secret powers and wisdom’. Step by step the old Bali animistic religion mixed up with Hinduism and Buddhism. Not for the common people. Only in the palaces of the Rajas and nobility. The royal families of Java and Bali had a good relationship to each other.
